Fall in Orlando means one thing: Halloween is here!

If you’re planning a trip to Walt Disney World or Universal Orlando this fall, you may be wondering which Halloween event you should experience.

The good news? You really can’t go wrong.

The catch? Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Halloween Horror Nights are VERY different experiences.

We’ve experienced both events, and several of our travel advisors have as well. So whether you’re looking for family-friendly Halloween fun or an evening filled with haunted houses and scares, here’s what you should know before choosing your event.

🎃 Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party

Held at Magic Kingdom, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is exactly what the name suggests. It’s Halloween, but without the horror.

The event takes place on select nights from August 7 through October 31, 2026. The party officially runs from 7 PM to midnight, with guests able to enter Magic Kingdom as early as 4 PM. 

This is the Halloween event we’d recommend for families looking for Disney magic with a Halloween twist.

What Can You Expect?

There is plenty to do during the party, including:

  • Halloween-themed entertainment
  • Special character appearances
  • Trick-or-treating
  • Halloween fireworks
  • Special entertainment and performances
  • Halloween decorations and atmosphere
  • Guests can dress in costume following Disney’s costume guidelines
  • Special Halloween treats and food
  • Event-exclusive merchandise

You can also experience select attractions with special Halloween-themed elements during the party. 

And let’s talk about the Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks. If you’re a Disney fireworks person, this is definitely something you’ll want to make time for.

The entire evening has a fun, festive atmosphere. There are spooky elements, but you’re not going to have monsters jumping out at you from around every corner.

That’s what makes this such a great option for families with younger children or anyone who enjoys Halloween but isn’t necessarily looking to be terrified.

👻 Halloween Horror Nights

Now we’re going in a VERY different direction.

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Orlando is designed to scare you.

This is the event for people who love horror movies, haunted houses, creepy environments, and the thrill of wondering what is about to jump out at them.

Instead of trick-or-treating and meeting characters, you’ll find haunted houses, scare zones, live entertainment, and plenty of things designed to make you question why you thought this was a good idea.

And yes, we say that lovingly because we keep going back too.

What Makes HHN Different?

Halloween Horror Nights has a much darker and more intense atmosphere than Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.

You can expect:

  • Haunted houses
  • Scare zones
  • Live entertainment
  • Horror-themed experiences
  • Scareactors throughout the event
  • Special food and drinks
  • Halloween Horror Nights merchandise

The haunted houses are a major part of the experience, and each one offers its own theme and story.

If you genuinely enjoy being scared, HHN is an experience unlike anything you’ll get at Disney.

If you do not enjoy being scared, however, we have one piece of advice:

Maybe don’t let your friends convince you that “it’s not that scary.”

Family-Friendly or Frightening?

This is probably the biggest difference between the two events.

Can You Do Both?

Absolutely!

And if you’re planning a vacation that includes both Walt Disney World and Universal Orlando, we actually think doing both can be a lot of fun.

The events are so different that it doesn’t feel like you’re doing the same thing twice.

You could spend one evening enjoying the Halloween magic at Magic Kingdom, watching the parade and fireworks, collecting candy, and meeting characters.

Then on another night, head over to Universal and spend the evening screaming your way through haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights.

It’s basically the best of both Halloween worlds.

So Which One Should You Choose?

Honestly, it depends on what kind of Halloween experience you’re looking for.

If you’re traveling with younger children, want to dress up, meet characters, trick-or-treat, and enjoy some Halloween magic, Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party is probably the better choice.

If you’re traveling with older kids, teenagers, adults, or anyone who loves horror and wants a genuinely scary night, Halloween Horror Nights is the way to go.

And if your vacation gives you the opportunity to experience both?

Do it!

They each offer something completely different, and experiencing both can make an Orlando Halloween vacation especially memorable.
